Boots on the ground

The Poverty Creek Trails Coalition (PCTC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create, maintain, and improve multi-use trail systems in the New River Valley through coordinated volunteer effort.

The organization was started when five local outdoor enthusiasts (the first PCTC trail crew leaders) saw a growing need for trail maintenance and construction on our local community trails. Today, PCTC crew leaders coordinate and host volunteer groups and individuals through advertised, scheduled public trail work events which are posted on this website and our Facebook page. PCTC trail crew leaders are continuously working on new trail construction and trail maintenance work on the Brush Mountain Properties, the Town of Blacksburg Mountain Bike Skills Park, and in the Jefferson National Forest.

PCTC is primarily focused on implementation via “boots on the ground” projects through coordinated volunteer efforts. In addition, PCTC board members work with landowners and managers such as the Town of Blacksburg,  the New River Land Trust (NRLT), and United States Forest Service (USFS)  to identify new potential trail projects, create concept plans, and perform the design work through data collection and surveying. More recently, PCTC has been involved with the implementation of McDonald Hollow Trail System, PCTC members were part of the design team, surveyed and flagged trails, and supported the construction of these new trails, in addition to managing the existing Poverty Creek Trail System.

PCTC is funded 100% through donations, which are used to pay for our expenses, which include insurance, repairing and replacing tools, expanding our tool supply, safety equipment, fuel, supplies, rental equipment, and anything and everything that is needed to fulfill the mission of constructing new trails or maintaining the miles and miles of existing trails we already have in our area.
